History of NEF

National Education Foundation was founded in late 1994 through a Cabinet Resolution. However it became operational in 1996. In 1997 Federal Teacher Foundation (FTF) was also merged with it. In order to make NEF a more vibrant and effective organization, it was restructured as corporate body through Presidential Ordinance in April, 2002. Through this ordinance NEF has assigned the mandate to promote basic education through Public Private Partnership in FATA, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK & ICT
Presently NEF is allocated to Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training vide Notification dated 29th July, 2011.
The NEF works closely with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community- Based Organizations (CBOs) to enhance their capacity to provide basic education and literacy to the children of their communities. An essential aspect is close co-operation with the private sector, as the government doesn’t have enough resources to fund basic education for everyone. The current programmes not only provide education but also mobilize communities to meet their own educational and development needs.
